With a Bachelor's Degree in Communication from the University of Colorado, her in depth studies with the incredible talents of audiobook legends January La Voy, Robin Miles and Jeffrey Kafer, Cathi has cultivated the craft of audiobooks into a career as an audiobook narrator with 100+ titles under her name as well as paying it forward and sharing what she's learned with her own students.​

One on One Audiobook Narration Coaching

  • Providing audiobook narration technique coaching tailored to a student’s specific skills, including the selection and performance of real audiobook excerpts.

  • Coach six 1-hour, weekly, one-on-one technique sessions and three (Audiobook Specific) 1-hour HSA sessions via Zoom

  • Technique sessions focus on both Fiction and Non-Fiction

Non-Fiction

  • Understanding the core job of a Non-fiction Narrator

  • Handling characters in Non-Fiction

  • How to understand the goal of the book

  • Finding the right energy levels based on the goal of the author

  • Keeping the narration interesting without “helping” the text too much.

Fiction

  • Bringing proper emotion to the read

  • Finding the subtext in the manuscript

  • Pacing in audiobooks

  • Knowing your audience “talking in someone’s ear”

  • Creating Compelling Characters

    • Differentiating characters in a scene by their motivations.

    • Creating character development.

    • Male/female dialogue.

    • Accents and dialects.

    • Adding flavor using incidental characters.

    • Your bank of character voices - main POV, the best friend voice, your hero, villain, etc.

    • Avoiding cliches and stereotypes.

    • Genre specific narration.

Home Studio Advisory Coach

(Audiobook Specific)

  • Educating the student on how to set up a professional VO recording studio or to evaluate the studio they currently have.

  • Understand the importance of sound treatment to mitigate reflection.

  • Understand and make recommendations on how to reduce or eliminate background and ambient noise.

  • Set up appropriate recording levels

  • Explain mic proximity and gain

  • Make sure the student is ready to record demo from home studio

  • Recheck recording levels

  • Recheck noise floor

  • Introduce the student to Audacity or Adobe Audition

    • Punch and Roll

    • Pickups

    • Editing and Mastering using Audacity and/or Adobe Audition

    • File Organization

    • How to use ACX

  • Create 3 Sample Demos for student's ACX profile
